"INFECTIONS"People with diabetes are more likely to develop infections. The reasons aren't clear, but it is suspected that higher amounts of sugar (glucose) in the blood, may cause this to occur. Infections can be very dangerous when one has diabetes. Blood sugar levels may rise unexpectedly and be hard to control when an infection is present.
Types of Infections and their treatments
1. Urinary Tract Infections
Symptoms range from no symptoms at all, to a burning, painful sensation during urination. Some experience fever, back pain, nausea, and vomiting. The urine may become cloudy, have a foul odor, or
contain blood. If you experience any of these symptoms, contact your physician immediately. Drinking fluids is helpful, and it may be necessary to begin taking antibiotics or other medication.2. Ear Infections
Malignant external otitis is an infection which can occur with diabetes. (The word malignant in this title does NOT mean cancerous, it only indicates that it is serious). This infection typically
occurs in males over the age of 65 who have had diabetes for many years. The infection starts in the soft tissue around the outer ear and can spread to the bones of the ear canal and eventually travel to the brain, itself.Symptoms include severe and persistent headaches, a loss of hearing, and possibly a foul-smelling discharge from the outer ear. Fever and chills, may occur. It is important to contact a physician
immediately, if an ear infection is suspected. Antibiotics offer help, and surgery may be necessary to remove any infected tissue or bone.3. Sinus Infections
Infections in the nostrils or sinuses can spread rapidly. The early symptoms include pain in your eyes or face. A yellowish-white nasal discharge may follow. Contact your physician if these symptoms appear.
4. Mouth Infections
Higher levels of glucose (blood sugar) in the saliva, encourage the development of oral infections. Swelling of the gums and gums which bleed easily may indicate the beginning of an infection. Gum disease
is not life threatening, but the earlier one seeks treatment from a dentist, the less likely he is to lose any teeth. The best way to prevent any of the above infections is to keep your blood sugar in a normal range, eat a healthy diet, exercise regularly, visit your physician often and schedule frequent visits with your dentist
